FIFA Club World Cup 2025: New Format Faces Scrutiny Ahead of Summer Tournament
The FIFA Club World Cup is set to take place this summer with a brand-new format, which features an expanded lineup of teams in an extended tournament structure. The new format has drawn criticism from both football journalists and fans, many of whom believe FIFA is seeking new ways to generate additional revenue from the game.
The revamped competition will now feature 32 club sides, with this year’s edition scheduled to be held in the United States between June 12, 2025, and July 12, 2025.
Qualified Teams
The teams that have qualified for the tournament are:
-
Europe: Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Porto, Red Bull Salzburg
-
South America: Boca Juniors, River Plate, Flamengo, Botafogo, Fluminense, Palmeiras
-
Oceania: Auckland City
-
North America: Inter Miami, Los Angeles FC, Seattle Sounders, Monterrey, Pachuca
-
Asia: Al Hilal, Al Ain, Ulsan, Urawa Red Diamonds
-
Africa: Al Ahly, Espérance de Tunis, Mamelodi Sundowns, Wydad Casablanca
These 32 teams have been divided into eight groups, each consisting of four teams.
Tournament Favourites
Many pundits and commentators regard Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning Champions League winners and continental treble holders, as the favourites to win the inaugural edition of the newly formatted Club World Cup.
However, Real Madrid and Manchester City are also among the top contenders, despite both clubs enduring underwhelming seasons that ended trophyless.
