Crystal Palace triumphed in their first ever competitive game in a UEFA-sanctioned European fixture, defeating Norwegian giants Fredrikstad 1–0 through a goal from French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who scored the only goal of the game after 37 minutes.
This tie, which is the first leg of a two-legged playoff to qualify for the group stage of this season’s UEFA Conference League, saw Palace dominate and take full control of proceedings. They enjoyed the vast majority of possession for most of the match and registered over 25 shots on the Fredrikstad goal, although only five were on target.
The second leg of this European tie is due to take place next Thursday. If Crystal Palace hold on to their first-leg lead, the South London club will qualify for the group stage of a major UEFA-organised European competition for the very first time in their history.
