Royal Greenwich Kicks Off Foster Care Fortnight with First-Ever Football Match Celebrating the Power of Relationships
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is set to host its first-ever football match as part of Foster Care Fortnight, highlighting this year’s theme: The Power of Relationships. On Saturday, 17 May, the event aims to highlight the strong, supportive connections that help children in care thrive.
The council’s team will feature a unique line-up of foster carers, children in care, council staff and local councillors, who will come together to take on the Avery Hill Reserves in a friendly, community-spirited match.
“More Than a Game”
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and captain of the council team, expressed his pride in leading the side onto the pitch:
“I’m proud to be leading such an inspiring line-up onto the pitch. Relationships are powerful, and the fostering networks we’re building in Royal Greenwich are vital to ensuring no child is left behind.
It’s a reminder that behind every young person in care, there’s a story shaped by the people who stood by them. This match is more than a game; it’s about celebrating the connections that help children reach their full potential. At a time when the UK is facing a critical shortage of foster carers, we need to come together and recognise the power we each have to make a difference.”
Football, like fostering, is built on trust, teamwork and shared purpose. The match will highlight how those values can lead to brighter futures for children and young people in care.
Maritime Radio will broadcast live commentary and interviews, and highlights will be shared throughout the day on the council’s social media channels.
Celebrating the Fostering Community
Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, added:
“Fostering is about more than just providing a roof over a child’s head – it’s about helping children reach their full potential by building the kind of supportive, loving relationships they need to thrive.
Relationships are essential, whether it’s emotional support for the child or practical help for carers. I can’t wait to see the community come together on Saturday – and I hope we bring home a win!”
