Happy Families by John Godber

THE ALEXANDRA PLAYERS – HAPPY FAMILIES

Happy Families is a funny, touching and nostalgic play by acclaimed British playwright John Godber, exploring family life, growing up and the relationships that shape us. Set in 1978, the story follows John as he looks back on his childhood and teenage years growing up in a working-class Yorkshire family. As he prepares to graduate, memories of his parents, grandparents and other relatives come flooding back, bringing with them the laughter, disagreements, ambitions and everyday dramas that make family life so recognisable. With Godber’s trademark humour and sharp observations, the play captures the changing relationships between generations, the challenges of growing up and the sometimes complicated business of finding your own way in life. It’s a production filled with comedy, warmth and moments of genuine emotion, reminding audiences that no family is perfect. After all… we’ve all got one!
