Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at a serious, crazy, and happy news story from the past week.
Serious News
Complaints regarding the heat on buses across London have reached their highest on record.
As of earlier this week, 276 complaints have been registered – up from 155 in 2024 and 149 in 2023. One journey reached 34°c on the top deck of a bus.
The majority of buses have air-cooling systems, though most are not air-conditioned.
TfL responded, saying that the figures “should be viewed in the context of the 1.8 billion bus journeys that are made in London each year”.
Lorna Murphy, TfL’s director of buses, added: “We've introduced several measures to help, including reflective roofs and insulation to help reduce heat, and opening windows for improved ventilation. All new double-decker buses are also fitted with air cooling”.
Crazy News
A serial Guinness World Record breaker in David Rush has teamed up with fellow YouTuber Josh Horton to break a crazy record.
The record in question was the most baked beans eaten using a toothpick in three minutes by a team of four.
The target was 429, and was smashed at 559 beans – while Rush’s contribution was 211, a record he previously set as an individual at 178.
Happy News
Three brothers are cleaning their local beach and parks to raise money for children in Gaza.
12-year-old Zac, Abel who is 10 and Todd aged eight are all brothers who have partnered up with their cousins, Koah aged 11 and Phoenix who is also eight after they were horrified seeing photos of starving Palestinian children.
The money will be raised for Save The Children, and their target of £500 has already been raised as they will continue their efforts past the summer holidays and “until the situation in Gaza is over”.
Zac spoke to the press, saying: “Me and Abel believe that no child should have to starve to death. Every kid is a kid, and I didn't want to just keep sitting by and seeing that happen”.
